Raspberries are one of my favorites! Oh, who am I kidding I love all berries! A giant bush of wild blackberries and a few very small wild raspberry bushes are in the yard, but I wanted MORE! So more blackberries were planted in the garden and I made room in the orchard and planted raspberries. I smell a berry cobbler in my future!!
If you’re not careful berries will get away from you. What I mean by that is they WILL take over! I searched for the perfect trellis and I think that I have found it.
Not everyone agrees that trellis’ are necessary. A friend of mine lets her tomatoes run free on the ground she, believes that she gets a bigger harvest than when she uses cages. I gave that a try once on a few of my tomato plants but then I got a bug infestation so I trellis as much as I can. It saves me space and keeps things organized, an organized garden is my kind of garden! My mom used to go out to her garden and open a pack of seeds and just throw them around. I would just stand there and cringe! I’m sure she thought it was funny to see my jaw hit the ground!
Trellis Designs
My Inspiration
There are many designs of trellis’ to choose from. I chose this one because it is sturdy, contains the berry vines and also makes picking the berries a breeze. Most importantly, we had almost all of the supplies needed right here in the yard. The only thing we had to purchase was the hog panel.
You can use pressure treated post for longevity, as you can see, we didn’t, we just used what we had on hand.
If you don’t have the ability to cut your lumber and hog panel to size, ask at the lumber yard for some help. They most likely will be able to do that for you.
With this trellis design I believe it will also be an easy task to drape bird netting over the berries to get a bigger harvest.
I like using hog panels (also know as utility panels or hog wire) because it’s not only fast but also the squares of the panels are big. Bigger squares makes it easier to reach in a pick your fruit and veggies. 😎
Modern Farmer has a great DIY on 3 ways to build a trellis using hog panels.(Link attached below). I haven’t tried these trellis’ yet but I plan to try the tunnel trellis very soon.
Now off to the garden I go… more trellis’ to build!

Those look great! I’ve never planted blackberries. I’ve always just went and picked them where I find them. This is the first year I’ve planted raspberries. We shall see!
